The Flinn Performance Screening Tool (FPST) is an instrument that can identify the valued life activities that are difficult to perform from the perspective of individuals recovering from an injury or illness. The FPST was developed in 1983 by an occupational therapy clinician, Dr. Sharon Flinn, for use in her busy orthopedic clinic and doctoral work. As a screening tool, information from the FPST was used to efficiently and effectively focus the evaluation, create a custom designed intervention program, monitor client progress, and demonstrate measurable outcomes.

The FPST was established using the 25 categories of occupations from the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework that represented all the domains of function. Over 300 photographs depict self-care, home and outside activities, sleep, social participation, education, and leisure tasks. For example, personal hygiene is a self-care activity that is represented by photographs such as washing hair, caring for toenails, and applying deodorant. Similarly, meal preparation is an example of a home activity that is represented by photographs such as using a microwave, opening and closing a jar, and washing silverware. In addition, 24 line drawings are used to represent the general capacities commonly performed during work.

Face validity, internal consistentcy, and test-retest reliability of the FPST was originally established with the input of 200 orthopedic and rheumatology clients. The items found in the FPST are updated by using input from current users on activities that are missing or dated. Acceptable score reliability and construct validity have been reported for persons with carpal tunnel syndrome. The FPST has identified common functional limitations and goals for persons with various upper limb impairments, unilatateral upper limb amputations, orthopedic clients in return-to-work programs, stroke, and hand therapy professionals.
